The project involved the demolition and rebuild of halls of residence (Mason Hall) at University of Birmingham, 850 self-contained student flats supplied as pre-built ‘pods’ were a key feature of the fast track construction plan.
On appointment I discovered that the original pod supplier had ceased trading, that the new supplier’s pods had different dimensions and that senior management’s interim solution was to disassemble pods at ground level on arrival prior to reassemble inside new 6-storey structure
I devised a solution that allowed new pods to be lowered directly into place without dis-assembly: resulting in a 3-fold increase in completion rate from 3 flats a day to 12 flats a day. We finished 680 flats within 6 months whilst simultaneously overseeing completion of work on another halls of residence.
